iFi audio launched the micro iDSD preamp, DAC, and amp in 2014, and this was a challenge to any small, portable and high performing DACs in the market. Since then, it has been raising the bar and it introduced its nano xDSD that features support for MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) audio, making it the first of the iFi portable DACs.
This portable device is part of the new DACs of the iFi company X Series. It is made of titanium vacuum-ion plated metal that is compact. The shiny housing is of aluminum and magnesium alloy, making it lightweight and strong.
The focus of iFi is ease of operation as it is the case with the iFi xDSD. All the switches and connections are made specifically for the new device. For instance, the rotary volume dial, and the middle of the dial is the on/off button.
The iFi xDSD is compact and small making it easy to fit in the pocket and you can travel with it anywhere. This is the smallest of the DACs devices by iFi, as it is close to the size of a deck of cards.
Style and quality.
The iFi xDSD can connect to both Android and Apple, and allows streaming on Spotify, iTunes, Tidal, and other music platforms. The music downloaded is of high studio quality and when you listen to music using this portable Bluetooth device, it guarantees enjoyment when using headphones or ear-monitors.
The aptX/AAC in the device comes in handy when you want to connect it to your tablet, phone or laptop. The USB and S/PDIF ports come in handy when you are traveling. The lightning connection camera kit works with the iOS and Android OTG cable that is compatible with the USB port.
The 3.0 USB cable comes with the Bluetooth device, an S-Balanced 3.5mm TRRS headphone circuit, and supports the high-resolution formats of MQA and DSD. Per channel it delivers 500mW of power, this will provide power for any power-hungry headphones.
The 3.5mm line can connect to hi-fi systems or any speakers in your vehicle. It is powered by batteries, and it charges from a 200mAh Li-Po battery and can last six hours when you use the USB and eight hours when you use Bluetooth to play music. But the play time will depend on the sensitivity of the headphone and output.
The sound it produces is neutral and clean. You will feel the pluck of a guitar or differentiate the sounds of pianos when you listen to music with the xDSD. It delivers music like no other Bluetooth portable USB DAC device because of the Burr-Brown multibit DSD1793 DAC Chipset.
The memory buffer system and the GMT Clock are mated to the Burr-Brown chipset. The system is from the AMR Audio’s DAC products that help to get rid of the jitter.
All this makes the xDSD plat at DSD that is 256 times more than the CD’s rate, and it plays with a PCM of up to 32/384 kHz.
This is a great option for audiophiles if you like a portable DAC.
