Sony’s WH-1000XM3 is the latest iteration of the popular Sony flagship wireless noise cancellation lineup, revised with even better noise cancellation and enhanced comfort. With high quality LDAC and AptX HD transmission and DSEE HX sound processing, the 1000XM3 delivers high resolution wireless audio to the ANC headphone market. The 1000XM3’s noise cancellation is configurable through an optional iOS / Android application, where it can be configured to automatically vary the isolation as your environment changes. A personal noise cancellation optimiser analyses the sonic attributes of your head and ears to produce the most effective noise cancellation possible from the 1000XM3. The unique atmospheric pressure optimiser tunes the sound at high altitude, to ensure the best sound quality during flights. The included aircraft adapter and cable allow the headphones to be used with the in-flight entertainment system and other wired devices, or in the event the long 30 hour battery is out of charge.
With its responsive 40mm liquid crystal polymer (LCP) diaphragms, the 1000XM3 produces thumping bass, smooth vocals, and clear treble. The sound signature can be defined as being warm, with an emphasis on the bass and midrange, and a shimmery finish to treble. The sound can be tuned through the Sony Headphones app however, allowing the user to increase the treble for a brighter sound signature, or amp up the bass for more thump. The new noise cancelling processor, the QN1, ensures the user is enveloped in the sound of their music and nothing more. If someone needs your attention however, place your hand over the ear cup to disable the noise cancelling and lower the music volume.
When you’re not using them, the Sony 1000XM3 neatly tuck into their lightweight and protective carrying case.
For a flatter, more vocal rich sound, have a look at the Audio Technica ATH-ANC900.
