iBasso DX340 MAX: Discrete 1-bit Architecture with 160 PWM-DACs

iBasso DX340MAX is the ultimate evolution of the DX340, expanding from 128 discrete PWM-DACs to 160 — more than eight times the count of other portable discrete-DAC devices. The larger array demanded stricter clock precision and algorithm scheduling, and together with a complete overhaul of the circuit design and wiring, the device achieves an AP-measured THD+N as low as -122dB, a figure iBasso compares to desktop 1-bit DACs priced around US$13,000. The chassis is machined from aerospace-grade titanium alloy with a 6.0-inch AMOLED display (1080×2160) and dual side-mounted volume knobs, measuring 150 × 89.5 × 27.2mm and weighing 610g.

FPGA-Master 3.0 and Dedicated Audio DSP

Digital control comes from FPGA-Master 3.0, iBasso's in-house developed audio controller with 7.5 times the LUT logic units of version 2.0. It serves as the main audio controller, requesting audio data directly from the SoC, and is paired with two Accusilicon femtosecond oscillators (phase noise as low as -158 dBc/Hz @ 1kHz) for fully synchronised single-clock operation — providing picosecond-level timing control of the PWM-DACs and minimising jitter. Rather than simulating DSP algorithms in software on the SoC, which compromises real-time performance, the DX340MAX uses a dedicated professional-grade audio DSP chip with 192dB dynamic range and -174dB THD+N, reducing SoC load and system-level jitter. The FPGA also enables adjustable even- and odd-harmonic settings: increasing even harmonics brings the sound closer to a tube amplifier, while increasing odd harmonics adds energy and drive.

Quad-Battery Power System and DC 12V External Supply

Power is supplied by four custom low-impedance 3200mAh lithium-polymer batteries managed by two independent battery management circuits, with the digital and analog sections each running from their own battery pack — isolating electromagnetic interference from the digital side and stabilising supply to the headphone amplifier. The analog section's two batteries are connected in series to form an 8.4V pack, giving more stable continuous output voltage, stronger transient capability and lower internal resistance than a single 4.35V battery. New over the battery-only DX320MAX is a patented DC 12V external power input (China patent ZL202510707956.3): when connected, battery power is bypassed, the headphone amplifier operates directly at ±12V, and a DC super-gain mode becomes available with output up to 2250mW + 2250mW @ 32Ω.

Headphone Amplifier, Components and Volume Control

The headphone amplifier is a 4-channel fully differential design with cascaded current feedback, using 80 transistors in a two-stage amplification structure with a complementary output circuit to reduce clipping distortion. The key upgrade over the AMP18 is a dedicated differential buffer stage built from two op-amps with up to 120dB CMRR, achieving full differential transmission and isolating the front stage from the rear power output. Balanced output impedance is 0.9Ω (0.4Ω single-ended). Components include 48 nickel-chromium metal film resistors at key points, paired with numerous electrolytic and film capacitors — among them discontinued RIFA and SPRAGUE types. Volume is handled by independent digital and analog controls; the analog stage is a custom 24-position stepped attenuator built from 96 high-precision resistors at one-tenth the size of a traditional stepped potentiometer, with channel difference below ±0.1dB. iBasso recommends keeping digital volume between 90 and 100 and adjusting the analog control from there.

Software, Key Specifications and Package Contents

The player runs Android 13 with system-wide SRC bypass, so both the Mango Player app and third-party streaming apps avoid Android's sample-rate conversion, and it can alternatively boot into Mango OS — a Linux-based, playback-only system with no WiFi or Bluetooth interference and low EMI. Hardware is an 11nm octa-core Snapdragon 665 with 8GB RAM, 256GB storage and microSD support up to 2TB; playback covers PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and native DSD up to 512x across all common formats (FLAC, WAV, APE, ALAC, AIFF, DSF, DFF, DXD and more). Outputs are 4.4mm balanced phone out (1300mW + 1300mW @ 32Ω on battery; 2250mW + 2250mW on DC-IN), 4.4mm balanced line out (4Vrms), 3.5mm single-ended phone out (330mW + 330mW battery; 570mW + 570mW DC-IN), 3.5mm coaxial and USB OTG via USB-C 3.1. Average play time is 17.5 hours with QC3.0/PD3.0 fast charging. The package includes a leather case, 12V AC adapter, USB-C, coaxial and burn-in cables, titanium cleaning cloth, screen protectors, warranty card and quick start guide.
